Milestones (first) are installed along the two major routes to Boston.

Chief Justice Samuel Sewall orders the installation of stone columns to indicate the distance to the Town House and are set along the northern post road to Cambridge and Watertown and the southern post road to Dedham. They subsequently include a one-mile stone at the corner of Washington Street and Lucas Street, a two-milestone near today’s 1909 Washington Street, and a three-milestone near today’s 1420 Tremont Street. The installation of the markers is resumed in 1729.*
